Thrifted Cabinet Update

We found this gorgeous cabinet on Facebook Marketplace a few weeks ago and it's finally all moved in and styled.

As a little reminder, we previously had a black console table with baskets.  We had it for a long time and it worked well for us over the years.

I even did a post back in 2017 when I covered the top in marble contact paper.

Give me a "whoop whoop" if you remember this post! :)  We sold the console table on FB Marketplace and then we had room to move the new cabinet into position. It's slightly longer and taller than the black table.

I gave the drawers and cabinets a little update with some peel and stick wallpaper from Dollar Tree.

I love this pattern!

I also added this fabric storage bin from Dollar Tree. It holds all of Willow's toys and accessories.

{The Abode} Living Room Gallery Wall

 

This is another project that I don't know what took us so long to complete it. I've been wanting to add a gallery wall of photos to this room forever!  After we had the wood floors installed I felt it was time to finally make it happen.  It took us a few hours and was not as challenging as I thought it would be.

We got the Ribba frames from Ikea and ordered the prints from my photo lab White House Custom Color.  We needed a few tools to get started: level, hammer, painter's tape, ruler, tape measure, calculator and a small screwdriver for opening the frames.

We figured out where we wanted the gallery wall to fit on the wall and made a center line down the middle with painter's tap.  We also arranged the photos on the floor to see what kind of spacing we wanted between the photos.

I think he's making sure our center line is level.

We did some calculations and put painter's tape where we wanted the next rows of photos to go.   We tested out the next row down.

*One tip is to also measure the frames because they can be off a little from what is on the packaging.*  We figured out where the frame would  hang from on the back and used that measurement to add our picture hanging nails to the wall right through the painter's tape.

After we had all the nails in, we hung the frames to make sure we liked the spacing.

Then we took them all down and added the photos before hanging them up on the wall.  We arranged them how we thought they looked best to our eyes.  It was so hard to narrow it down to nine photos but we can always change out the photos or add more later.

{The Abode} Upgrading Our Dining & Living Room Floors

 This is a project that I've wanted to tackle since we moved into our home (16 years ago!).  Our dining and living rooms both had sad grey wall to wall carpeting, that only got worse as the years went on.

Here's the dining room before.

Because of the open floor plan of our home, each of these rooms is adjacent to wood flooring (spot the kitty!). Why they had carpeting I'll never know.

Here's the living room before.  We put area rugs in each of the rooms to try and down play the hideous carpeting.  

I never wanted to get new carpeting because I only wanted wood floors.  This is a good shot of how the living room adjoins the foyer and the family room.   

The floors had to acclimate to our home for a week before they could be installed. Willow is helping.  We had to empty out the rooms of all small furniture and decor.

Our installer worked so quickly that I barely had time to snap some "in progress" photos.

They match the kitchen floors pretty well!

Here's the living room after. We're still playing around with furniture placement so it's not finished but I'm LOVING the  new floors!

One more view.  It's still in progress but we're getting things back to normal. I don't  know what took us so long to do this!  It was not as costly as we thought it would be and it makes such a difference! What do you think?

Fall Decor:The Look for Less

The new Fall Jonathan Adler catalog arrived in the mail and I swooned over its pages.

Then this adorable Target catalog arrived and I was equally smitten.  Don't even get me started on the plaid everything..that's for another post.

Target

I love Jonathan Adler (see here and here) but a lot of those prices are out of my budget. I noticed that the Target book had many similar items that were way more affordable.

  

From lighting to decorative objects to furniture, mirrors and pillows..I found some really great pieces that won't break the bank.

I'm all for splurging on some quality items but when you want to add a few inexpensive accessories, it pays to shop around!  What's your favorite splurge vs. steal?

{DIY} Chalk Painted Piano Bench

After the success of my Chalk Painted Mason Jars project, I was ready to venture out and try chalk painting a piece of furniture.

I started small with an old piano bench from our last piano. When we upgraded to an upright piano in 2012, the piano movers removed our old grand piano but I kept the bench.

 It sits in front of the keyboard which is across from our regular piano.   It serves its purpose and comes in handy as extra seating when we are entertaining.   The finish had seen better days, it was pretty beat up and in need of a makeover.

 I used American Deco Chalk Finish Paint (from Michael's). The color is Yesteryear and it's a soft, neutral grey.  I painted the top of the bench first to see how it would look and if I liked it.

 I used a foam brush to apply the paint.

 I really liked the results so I kept on painting. Here it is after one coat.

 After two coats of paint.

 I didn't need to do any additional distressing to the piece.

The inside of the top was in pretty bad shape so I painted that as well. I left the interior of the bench unpainted and I love the contrast of the dark, rich wood against the light, painted wood.

 I applied two coats of the clear creme wax and buffed between coats with a soft cloth. The wax protects the paint and gives it a soft sheen.

I think it's an upgrade!

It looks cozy with a faux sheepskin thrown over it as well.
