{Travel} Washington, DC Weekend.-Day 3

On our last day in Washington, D. C. we decided to visit George Washington's Mount Vernon.

But first, breakfast!

It was a short drive to Mount Vernon out of the city.

 We purchased timed tickets for a tour of the main house.

 They let a few people in at a time to keep the tour going and no photos were allowed inside the house.

 The view from outside is stunning.

 After the main house tour we were free to walk around the estate.

 It is huge with lots of gardens, orchards and buildings.

 I couldn't get enough of these gardens.

 Spring/early summer was definitely hitting here before it did at home.

We spent a very nice morning exploring the estate and then took our time getting home. D. C. we'll be back!

{Travel} Washington, DC Weekend - Day 2

We woke up on day 2 of our D.C. adventure without a set plan.  We did a little research and decided to go to Old Town Alexandria for the day.  We booked tickets for the river taxi later that morning. To catch up on day 1, click here.

 We got over to the area where the river taxi would pick us up early so we could visit the Martin Luther King Memorial.

 It's an outdoor, walk through memorial.

It's really breathtaking!

 It is set on the Potomac with beautiful views of the water.

 Next to the MLK Memorial was the Franklin D. Roosevelt Memorial.

 That was also an outdoor, walk through memorial with winding trails, fountains and lots of stone.

It takes visitors through his two presidencies.

 We had another beautiful sunny day.

It was getting quite hot actually so we were ready for a cool river ride.

 Finding where the water taxi was picking us up was a little tricky, even with GPS. There was no dock.  It just pulls up to the side of the river at a particular spot.

We had a the boat to ourselves for the whole ride. It's beautiful to see the city from the water.

 We docked in Alexandria and this boat was hanging out looking pretty.

 My first impression of Old Town Alexandria was that it reminded me of the Hamptons. A pretty sea side area (without the sea).

 

 Then we started walking through the cobblestone streets and saw how charming the rest of the city is too.

We stopped for lunch at Mia's and kicked it off with some delicious sangria.  All of the food was really tasty.  We spent the rest of the day exploring Alexandria, popping into shops and walking around the town.

 That night we stayed close to the hotel.  My outfit for the evening.

 We wanted to check out Union Market and it was a short walk from the hotel. It's a huge indoor market with restaurants and shops.

There was this cool vending machine with products sold at the market (hot sauce, granola, cookie dough...)

 We had dinner at Bidwell Restaurant(look at those storm clouds behind us)

It was another fantastic meal.

 This was a chandelier made out of recycled plastic bottles.

 As we walked back to the hotel we took in some of the murals on the buildings.

This mural is by Yoko Ono and is part of the Hirshhorn exhibit Yoko Ono:Four Works for Washington and The World.  So cool!!
