{DIY} Recovering The Bar Stools-AGAIN

We recently repainted our island to this pretty color Seacliff Heights and felt like the bar stools needed a refresh as well.

We added the current fabric back in 2014 and you can see that post here.  The hardest part was removing all of the old staples. I used a screwdriver to lift them and needle nose pliers to pull them out.
[Our old kitchen and island]
The process of covering them was the same this time, and I used the old fabric as a pattern for the new fabric.  I bought two yards but could have gotten away with one. We used my dad's very old staple gun (thank you!) to attach the new fabric.
Mr. Click helped me put the chairs back together.
We added new felt pads to the feet.
The new fabric is pretty subtle and has a slight texture to it.
It definitely lightens up the space along with the new island color.
We'll probably change out the stools eventually but for now, they are working well in the space.

I know a certain kitty who is enjoying them!

Stranger Things on Broadway-A Day in NYC

City Girl #1 called and asked if I wanted to go see Stranger Things The First Shadow on Broadway the next day. She had won the ticket lottery and had a second ticket up for grabs. It was for a Sunday matinee and the timing worked so I said "yes"!
Mr. Click dropped me off a the train station and I read my book on the way to the city.
CG met me at Penn Station and we stopped for some cappuccinos on our walk to the theatre.

The show is in the Marquis Theatre in the Marriott Marquis Hotel. It's very slick and modern looking.  You take a few escalators up to the theatre.
The concession area.
With my girlie!  It was so cool to get the PRIDE Playbills!
We didn't get a cocktail but some of them looked interesting.
I wasn't sure what the show was about but did a little research before I got up there.
It's set in Hawkins in 1959 so it's a prequel to the Stranger Things tv show. We absolutely loved this show.  It has some scary parts of course (one huge jump scare for me!) and the special effects are incredible--truly mind blowing!  The cast was amazing and the show had so many fun elements, there was a lot of music, dancing and humor and it's a play not a musical!  Seeing the Stranger Things tv show  parents as high school kids was a lot of fun too.

It is a long show, almost 3 hours and I had to book it out of there to get my train home.  CG got me to Penn Station in plenty of time.   Waiting for my NJ Transit platform is always stressful.
I had a nice, uneventful train ride home and I couldn't stop thinking about the show!!
Mr. Click and I had a really nice dinner on the way home.  What a Sunday!

Kicking Off Summer- Memorial Day Weekend

We hosted a small get together for Memorial Day weekend when City Girl #2 was home for a visit. It was chilly and the pool was freezing so nobody went in the pool but we still managed to have a lot fun.  I didn't take many photos which I am bummed about. We had a taco bar with taco meat and black beans, queso, chips and lots of toppings.  It worked out really well.   We also had some appetizers and too many desserts (trust me!).

Some of us kept busy with games. We played old school Catchphrase Jr and then on the other end of the spectrum, we played Cards Against Humanity.
Our friend brought their new puppy Hailey.
She was the sweetest and so snuggly.
We had some of our musician friends there and got a private concert.
I hope we do this again!
We drove City Girl home on Sunday and then explored a local park on Monday.  We want to come back with this old time train is running.

I love these solar lights that we got for the pool from Amazon. They look cute during the day and are color changing at night.

Books I've Read Lately

 Nettle & Bone

"This isn't the kind of fairy tale where the princess marries a prince.  It's the one where she kills him.

Marra ― a shy, convent-raised, third-born daughter ― is relieved not to be married off for the sake of her parents’ throne. Her older sister wasn’t so fortunate though, and her royal husband is as abusive as he is powerful. From the safety of the convent, Marra wonders who will come to her sister’s rescue and put a stop to this. But after years of watching their families and kingdoms pretend all is well, Marra realizes if any hero is coming, it will have to be Marra herself.

If Marra can complete three impossible tasks, a witch will grant her the tools she needs. But, as is the way in stories of princes and the impossible, these tasks are only the beginning of Marra’s strange and enchanting journey to save her sister and topple a throne."

I loved this spin on a fairy tale!

Sunrise On The Reaping

"As the day dawns on the fiftieth annual Hunger Games, fear grips the districts of Panem. This year, in honor of the Quarter Quell, twice as many tributes will be taken from their homes.

Back in District 12, Haymitch Abernathy is trying not to think too hard about his chances. All he cares about is making it through the day and being with the girl he loves.

When Haymitch’s name is called, he can feel all his dreams break. He’s torn from his family and his love, shuttled to the Capitol with the three other District 12 tributes: a young friend who’s nearly a sister to him, a compulsive oddsmaker, and the most stuck-up girl in town. As the Games begin, Haymitch understands he’s been set up to fail. But there’s something in him that wants to fight . . . and have that fight reverberate far beyond the deadly arena."

I hadn't read The Hunger Games in a long time but some of the names in this prequel started coming back to me.  I forgot how brutal the games were/are but liked the book a lot.

Lady Tan's Circle of Women

"According to Confucius, “an educated woman is a worthless woman,” but Tan Yunxian—born into an elite family, yet haunted by death, separations, and loneliness—is being raised by her grandparents to be of use. Her grandmother is one of only a handful of female doctors in China, and she teaches Yunxian the pillars of Chinese medicine, the Four Examinations—looking, listening, touching, and asking—something a man can never do with a female patient.

From a young age, Yunxian learns about women’s illnesses, many of which relate to childbearing, alongside a young midwife-in-training, Meiling. The two girls find fast friendship and a mutual purpose—despite the prohibition that a doctor should never touch blood while a midwife comes in frequent contact with it—and they vow to be forever friends, sharing in each other’s joys and struggles. No mud, no lotus, they tell themselves: from adversity beauty can bloom."

This was a fascinating read but heavy material.

The Goddess of Warsaw

"The Goddess of Warsaw is an enthralling tale of a legendary Hollywood screen goddess with a dark secret about her life in the Warsaw Ghetto. When the famous actress is threatened by someone from her past, she must put her skills into play to protect herself, her illustrious career, and those she loves, then and now."

Another heavy read but a great book!

Margo's Got Money Troubles

"As the child of a Hooters waitress and an ex-pro wrestler, Margo Millet's always known she’d have to make it on her own. So she enrolls at her local junior college, even though she can’t imagine how she’ll ever make a living. She’s still figuring things out and never planned to have an affair with her English professor—and while the affair is brief, it isn’t brief enough to keep her from getting pregnant. Despite everyone’s advice, she decides to keep the baby, mostly out of naiveté and a yearning for something bigger."

After four heavy books, I was ready for something lighter and this was a perfect antidote.  I finished it on the plane coming home from vacation (and read a lot of it sitting poolside).  So funny and poignant! It's also going to be a show on Apple tv+ next year with a stellar cast. I can't wait!

Part of Your World
"After a wild bet, gourmet grilled-cheese sandwich, and cuddle with a baby goat, Alexis Montgomery has had her world turned upside down. The cause: Daniel Grant, a ridiculously hot carpenter who’s ten years younger than her and as casual as they come—the complete opposite of sophisticated city-girl Alexis. And yet their chemistry is undeniable.

While her ultra-wealthy parents want her to carry on the family legacy of world-renowned surgeons, Alexis doesn’t need glory or fame. She’s fine with being a “mere” ER doctor. And every minute she spends with Daniel and the tight-knit town where he lives, she’s discovering just what’s really important. Yet letting their relationship become anything more than a short-term fling would mean turning her back on her family and giving up the opportunity to help thousands of people."

This is what I'm reading now and it's my second Abby Jimienez book. I'm reading them out of order but I don't think it is a big deal.  This is book 1 of 3.

What are you reading?

{Thrifting} Thrifting Finds Lately-All The Tops (and a few Housewares!)

I only got to two thrift stores this past month but I think I hit the jackpot with tops!

I also found some cute housewares like this chinoiserie duck tea pot.  I've been collecting this style of vase and I loved this tea pot for the kitchen.
This canister caught my eye. It looks like a Nantucket basket that many women carry as a little summer purse.  This is a PartyLite tea light holder that glows with a tea light burning in the bottom (I take the top off for that).  I think it's got a coastal vibe that I love.

I also snagged this Lenox dish for our guest bath.  It's the perfect spot to put your jewelry on when washing your hands or putting lotion on.
Now onto the clothes.  I realized needed some new  summer tops so they were on the top of my list.  I spotted this dress and thought it was a romper.  It makes a good swimsuit cover up.
As for tops, here we go. First this white lace trimmed t-shirt from LOFT and these high waisted denim shorts.  I also needed blue denim shorts(I only had black denim shorts).
This cream linen tank will be so versatile.
I love this Madewell floral top.
I also found this cute olive top and another pair of denim shorts.
Then I found this Lily Pulitzer strapless top--so summery!
I also snagged this pink off the should Michael Kors top and paired it with my comfy wide leg pants.
I also tried it with this bright maxi skirt that I got last year.
I picked up this striped long sleeve t-shirt and it is so soft. I found out it's from a pricey maternity line so now I'm trying to sell it on Poshmark.   $$$
And finally I got this NWT (new-with-tags) cover up top from Cupshe.  I like to wear these open weave style sweaters over a bathing suit or tank top in the summer.  I am officially obsessed with these denim shorts too.
I think I'm set for summer!

Graduation Weekend in NYC

We had busy weekend in NYC when City Girl #1 graduated.
This was my outfit for heading into the city.
We stayed at the same Midtown Hilton as our last NYC overnight trip and had a nice lunch in the lobby bar.
On the subway to our first stop.
Walking around the city...I love exploring Greenwich Village.
Meeting up with the (almost) graduate.
We snapped some pictures before the awards ceremony.
There was a reception for the award recipients and families after the ceremony.
We didn't stay too long because we had dinner reservations at Shuka. It was so good!
The next day we enjoyed some breakfast in the executive lounge.
We had an open morning so we walked around and went through Bryant Park.

Then we walked to Central Park and decided to go to the zoo. We've never been there and it was so nice to have the time to check it out.
It was definitely fun to see the animals interacting.
They were pretty active that morning.
Cuties!
Her school's graduation was held at Madison Square Garden.  How cool!
Waiting for the ceremony to begin...
Seeing her get her MBA!
After the ceremony...
The graduate!
We went into Brooklyn and took a few more pics.
Toasting the grad!
Delicious dinner at Lilia.  What an exciting, whirlwind of a weekend!
