Thrifty Finds Thursday

I've done some semi-regular thrifting over the summer but haven't posted all of my treasures.

This is a sampling of some of the bargains I've scored lately. Yesterday I had about 15 minutes at Goodwill and I found the stars, bowl and clothes (including trying them on).  

Sometimes that's the way to go!

{Get Crafty} Succulent Cork Magnets

I've seen these wine corks-turned succulent holders around the interwebs and thought they'd be a good way to upcycle some of my wine corks.  

My succulent terrarium is still going strong so I felt pretty confident in my ability to keep these guys alive too.

Supplies needed:

old wine corks

succulent plants

sharp X-acto knife (paring knife and screwdriver also help)

soil

mini magnets

hot glue gun

  I followed the directions from here.

The trickiest part is carving out a hole in the cork.  I started by scoring a circle with the X-acto knife and then removing pieces of the cork, carefully digging down as I went.   Once you have a small hole, you can use a paring knife or flat head screwdriver to twist down into the cork and break it up.

 I went pretty slowly to keep from stabbing myself.

When the hole was deep enough for the succulent and its roots, I hot glued a tiny magnet to the cork.

 Add a little soil and the succulent to the cork and tamp down the soil around the succulent.

(I didn't need the extra soil because there was plenty in the pot that the succulents came in.)

 

Hang them wherever you've got a metal surface (like the side of my fridge).

 Or anyplace you want a little bit of green in your life.

I used some burlap scrap book paper on my magnetic chalkboard in the kitchen to show them off.

So far I've only watered them once and used a medicine dropper to give them each a few drops. Easy!

This was an inexpensive project, the magnets and plants combined, cost under $5 and I still have supplies to make a few more plus unlimited corks in my crafting arsenal.

{Travel} Back In The New York Groove - Part 3

The last part of our New York adventure started with some coffee in bed 

(more like ON bed).

We went to Le Pain Quotidien for brunch, love that place so much!

Fresh, delicious food, served with a French twist.

I had a black bean hummus tartine (open-faced Belgian sandwich)

Look at my cappuccino!  

College Girl got the steel cut oatmeal and fresh berries and her sister got the "petit dejeuner ".

I also had some fresh fruit and the hubs got a muffin and toast.

We first tried LPQ on our Washington, DC trip here.

Our hotel was very close to Bryant Park.  

 

We walked around and admired the flowers and the entire park. 

It's such a beautiful, tranquil spot in the city and much smaller than Central Park.

After Bryant Park we visited the department store where College Girl worked this summer.

We also went to Grand Central Station.

Always a favorite spot to visit.

It was such a beautiful day in the city and I didn't want to leave.

We walked around and soaked up as much as we could before we went home.

He wants these for our driveway. :)

{Travel} Back In The New York Groove - Part 2

When we left off here, we were going back to our hotel to relax a bit before going out for the night.  

We all met up here at Pier 83 (West 42nd Street & 12 Avenue) to take the Harbor Lights Tour on the Circle Line Cruise.

Got a quick photo with Mr. Click while we were waiting in line.

The cruise was a great way to see the city's major landmarks.

We got up close and personal to this pretty lady.

She also looks quite fetching in the distance.

The weather was perfect and we learned so much as we sailed around the harbor.

Trying to catch a sun flare as the sun was setting.

It was a lot darker than it looks in this photo. By the end of the cruise we could see all the twinkling lights of the city.

Then it was dinner time.

 

We had a fantastic meal at Al Horno Lean Mexican Kitchen in Hell's Kitchen.

On our walk back to the hotel we passed Bryant Park. It looked pretty magical at night.

We were tired but had one more day of our adventure...

in the Big Apple.
