Vintage Shopping in Philly/70's Party

We went into Philly to look for some vintage clothes for an upcoming 70's party that we were invited to.

The neighborhoods were so pretty, all dressed up for fall.

I saw this sign in a cafe window. #justsayin

We stopped in at a vintage shop and I immediately fell for this dress. I tried a few things on but this was the winner.  My socks make the outfit!  Those sleeves!

We had lunch at Bareburger which never disappoints. This time instead of a burger, I tried a salad and added some falafel.  So yum! Those pink things are watermelon radishes.  There was also guac, quinoa, spinach, red onion, tomatoes, sprouts and a delish tahini dressing.

 Here's my look the night of the party.  I tried to get those Farrah waves in my hair.

Mr. Click got this groovy shirt at the vintage shop and we added a creepy 70's stash and a wig.

We danced all night (in platforms!).  They had a disco ball and everything. Such a fun night!

{Getting Organized} Food Storage Containers

The dreaded food storage container area of my cabinet was driving me crazy.  It was always a mess and we could never find the right lid for the container we were using.  It was all very frustrating!

I was inspired again by Kathryn at Do It On a Dime to get this area organized once and for all. She suggested pull out drawers and I looked for some solutions online but the cabinet we use for the containers is very narrow and I wasn't finding much.  

I do have pull out shelves though and they can serve the same purpose.  I emptied the contents of the cabinet, finding new homes for some of the items stored in there and getting rid of things we no longer use.

Kathryn suggests these steps for taming the food storage clutter:

1) Go through your containers and only keep what you use.  They seem to multiply. Also make sure you have a lid for every container.  I had some lids with no matching container and vice versa.

2) Try and keep only containers that nest within each other to save space. I can see everything that have in one place.

3) Upgrade to glass when possible (still working on this).  Plastic containers are good for school lunches so I'm keeping my set from Ikea which takes up very little footprint.

4)Keep the lids in their own pull-out drawer.  If you don't have a drawer, a Dollar Tree dish pan can do the trick. I had a whole stash of these from this tween spa party, way back when.

The dishpan easily slides in and out of the lower part of the cabinet.  I can also bring up to the counter when I'm packing food up after a meal. It is so convenient.  This zero-cost update/project has made my food storage life so much easier!

{Recipe} Pioneer Woman's The Best Chocolate Sheet Cake

This cake has been on my radar to make for a long time, I just needed a big group to serve it to and the right occasion. Miss High School's birthday party was the perfect excuse to try it out.

It's Pioneer Woman's "The Best Chocolate Sheet Cake. Ever. "recipe.  I think it's also called Texas Sheet Cake and the recipe has been around for ages.

What I liked about it was that it contained every day ingredients that I usually always have on hand. The only thing I didn't have was buttermilk and she explains how to easily make your own with vinegar and milk.  It's super simple to throw together and it bakes in a jelly roll pan in 20 minutes. Then you top it off with some warm icing and the cake kind of ices itself. 

Her recipe calls for adding pecans to the icing but I left them off and used these fun Sixlet candies on top of the cake.

 The kids seemed to really enjoy it. It's very rich and chocolatey.  The icing really makes it special!

Try it at your next pot luck or party, you won't be disappointed.

{Get Thrifty} Thursday 11.10.16

I forgot to share these cuties last week in all the excitement of my fancy espresso machine thrift score!

 I don't "need' any more holiday decor but the plates just spoke to me. #buyme  I have a few Disney plates that I hang behind our Disney tree in the basement and these should coordinate nicely.

Here's how I hang the plates just for the holiday season.

They were just so darn cute, I couldn't resist.  They remind me of the "It's a Small World" ride. This is what's on the backs of the plates.   What do you think?
