{Entertaining} Cupcake Wars Party

She decided on a Cupcake Wars party for her 13th birthday party with her friends.
She loves the Food Network show with the same name.  The concept is that two sets of bakers compete in cupcake bake off.
Our color scheme was hot pink and aqua. I only had red straws left from this party so I added little pink scrapbook paper flags to them.
The party set up was pretty simple.
We set up two work areas in the kitchen with similar supplies. One on the island and
one on the kitchen table. I found the plastic tablecloths at Target on clearance.
I also printed out scoring sheets so they knew what they were being judged on.
I used this counter to hold all of the shared items like cupcake liners, sprinkles and other supplies.
{The calm before the storm.}
We purchased aprons online (you can see the stack of blue ones on the table).
They would also serve as party favors for the girls.
I made another balloon swag. They are so easy, economical and festive!  They also last a really long time (if you want to make it ahead of time).  Here's the how-to.
I found this one and only shot of the whole dining room on my phone.
We served strawberries and pop corn "cup cakes" on this tiered server.

We also had pretzel nuggets, carrots and veggie dip, grapes, apples and caramel, tomato pie and other snacks.
My daughter made this sign for the drinks on the buffet.
I used my thrifted champagne bucket for ice.
I threw an old vinyl table cloth over the buffet and draped some tissue paper pom pom garlands (from Wal Mart) on the buffet and mirror.

After explaining the rules to the girls, we had them draw slips of paper to determine which team they would be on and my husband handed out their aprons.
They got right to work on their cupcakes.
They could pick which flavor of mix they wanted to use from vanilla, chocolate or red velvet.
They also had to incorporate two "mystery ingredients" into their cupcakes.
One of the mystery ingredients was this Box of Boogers candy and the other one was Berry Burst Oreos....was there any hope for these cupcakes?
The theme was Candy Land.
Here's me telling them they should be brainstorming their presentation.
The teams really worked well together.
I manned the oven to prevent any accidents.
While the cupcakes were baking, the teams worked on their displays.
I bought cardboard cupcake stands at Michael's.
They also had a bunch of ribbons, paper and markers to decorate their displays.
Here are they are!
Very impressive, right?

I had some friends come over to help us with the judging.
The teams were judged on Taste, Appearance,Creativity, Clean Station and Presentation to Judges.
Also, one of the girls who got there late became an impromptu judge.

I prepped the cake while the birthday girl opened her gifts and the judges deliberated.
The birthday girl made her own cake-- it was chocolate mousse and we had just enough!
Recipe coming soon
I decorated it with these cute little flag picks from Wal Mart and the candles were left over from her Avengers party.
We had a very special guest judge to reveal the winner!  He pulled the winning color slip out of his pocket.
It was very close with pink just edging out blue by a few points.
Then it was time for singing happy birthday and enjoying the cake before grabbing a few cupcakes and their apron favors to take home with them.
I think a fun night was had by all!
