Friday Favorites

Happy Friday! Here are some of my favorite things lately...

Gift Fruit Box:We received this lovely box of winter fruit in the mail. What a great New Year's surprise!

The Pearl That Broke Its Shell by Nadia Hashimi:  I'm trying to keep my reading up this year and this book was a great addition to my list.
From Amazon-"In Kabul, 2007, with a drug-addicted father and no brothers, Rahima and her sisters can only sporadically attend school, and can rarely leave the house. Their only hope lies in the ancient custom of bacha posh, which allows young Rahima to dress and be treated as a boy until she is of marriageable age. As a son, she can attend school, go to the market, and chaperone her older sisters.
But Rahima is not the first in her family to adopt this unusual custom. A century earlier, her great-great grandmother, Shekiba, left orphaned by an epidemic, saved herself and built a new life the same way.
Crisscrossing in time, The Pearl the Broke Its Shell interweaves the tales of these two women separated by a century who share similar destinies. But what will happen once Rahima is of marriageable age? Will Shekiba always live as a man? And if Rahima cannot adapt to life as a bride, how will she survive?"
Bling Wash: My pal Jessica sent me this link and I've been cleaning my jewelry this way ever since.

My Recipe Index: I've been revisiting some of my old faves in my newly organized Recipe Index in an attempt to get out of my cooking rut.
I made a pot of this Slow Cooker Taco Soup last week and enjoyed it the whole week.
I also made a pot of this Crock Pot Split Pea Soup recently.  Give me all of the soups!
I reworked my Tater Tot Hot Dish and swapped out the tofu for some beef-less crumbles and it was GOOD and Mr. Click approved! Recipe to come.
The Homemade Vegan Pantry by Miyoka Schinner: I picked up this book at the library and there are so many things I want to try and make from scratch-like vegan yogurt, butter, bacon and cheese.

February Goodie Box

{Disclaimer: I was given a Daily Goodie Box to review but all opinions are my own}
It's Daily Goodie Box time!  February's box arrived yesterday and it was nice to get some 'happy mail'.
Let's take a look, shall we?
Natralia - Anti-Itch Soothing Cream https://natralia.com/skin-care/anti-itch-soothing-cream
I think it was a fluke that I got two of these but I'm not complaining.  I've used Natralia's products before and this anti-itch soothing cream works really well on bug bites.

Pure LYFT - All Natural Caffeine Powderhttps://purelyft.com/collections/shop-now/products/variety-pack
I have to admit I thought these were toothbrushes when I first saw them!  They are actually pre workout caffeine energy drink mixes. They come in 4 flavors and have zero calories.

Skinny Crisps - Gourmet Crackershttps://skinnycrisps.com/shop?olsPage=products
These are gluten free, low carb, vegan & high fiber. Brownie crisp crackers sound like they'd go well with a cup of coffee or tea.

Flathau’s Fine Foods - Cheese Strawshttps://flathausfinefoods.com/collections/gourmet-cookies/products/cheese-straws
Cheese straw snacks with a touch of chipotle.  Spicy!

Coco Luxe - Hydrationhttps://www.cocoluxelife.com/collections/hydration
I got some of this in last month's Daily Goodie Box and it was so good. I'm glad to have some more of it.

Nature Nate's - Raw Unfiltered Honeyhttps://www.naturenates.com/products/
How cute are these little packets of honey?!  It comes in a great little to-go size.

Eco Lips - MONGO KISS™ Lip Balmhttps://ecolips.com/collections/mongo-kiss-lip-balm
I tried this last month and it is so soothing. The flavors are delicious!

You can sign up for own Daily Goodie Box here, no credit card is ever needed!

{Entertaining} Book Club for The Giver of Stars

Last month I hosted book club and our  book was The Giver of Stars by Jojo Moyes.
From the author's website

"Alice Wright marries handsome American Bennett Van Cleve hoping to escape her stifling life in England. But small-town Kentucky quickly proves equally claustrophobic, especially living alongside her overbearing father-in-law. So when a call goes out for a team of women to deliver books as part of Eleanor Roosevelt’s new traveling library, Alice signs on enthusiastically.

The leader, and soon Alice's greatest ally, is Margery, a smart-talking, self-sufficient woman who's never asked a man's permission for anything. They will be joined by three other singular women who become known as the Packhorse Librarians of Kentucky.

What happens to them--and to the men they love--becomes an unforgettable drama of loyalty, justice, humanity and passion. These heroic women refuse to be cowed by men or by convention. And though they face all kinds of dangers in a landscape that is at times breathtakingly beautiful, at others brutal, they’re committed to their job: bringing books to people who have never had any, arming them with facts that will change their lives."

The book was a hit but so was my vegan charcuterie board (I'm still not as good as College Girl though).
I try and make some food that was talked about in the book, so bean soup it was!
I also made cornbread muffins.
The living room was ready for a winter book club.
The ottoman gets pretty full with snacks while we discuss the book - we like popcorn, what can I say?  I also made my Restaurant Style Salsa in a Flash and I always get a lot of compliments on it.  Another book club "on the books"!

Latest Aldi Finds

I took another Aldi trip recently and found some new (to me) products. They are all vegan too!

The Garlic Knots are in the bread aisle  (not frozen).  They bake right in the bag.
Yummy Autumn Glory apples.
Super easy Bruschetta, just toast some baguette slices and add this on top. Delish!  Would also be good on pasta or mixed with rice.
Most English muffins contain dairy but these do not.Yay for me!
I haven't tried either of these yet but I'm definitely intrigued.
I've heard Aldi chocolate is superior and this dark Moser Roth bar is pretty decadent.  What are your favorite Aldi finds?
