{Getting Crafty} Recycled Magazine Christmas Trees

I've been wanting to make these ever since I saw them here and then here.  They are the perfect Christmas craft--FREE and easy to make, plus the bonus of reusing/recycling your old magazines and catalogues.
Start with any magazine or catalogue and press open to flatten the spine. Then start folding.  The first fold is from the right hand corner over to the left side of the page.
Then fold the folded piece over onto itself into a point.
Flip it over and it should look like this.  That point on the bottom needs to be folded up and tucked inside to make the bottom of the tree nice and flat.
It should look like this.
Repeat for every page of the magazine.
The thicker the magazine, the longer it will take and the fuller your tree will be.
This one was a Martha Stewart Living Magazine. You can leave them as is, or get a little fancy. Isn't it sweet in my thrifted white bowl?
 Enter fancy!!
I've been coveting this glitter set for a long time and finally got it with a Michael's 40% off coupon.  I also picked up some spray adhesive.
I gave the trees a quick coat of the spray adhesive
and sprinkled some of the glitter on the trees.
It's kind of subtle but sparkles when the light hits it.
They are hanging out on the kitchen counter right now.
I can't stop making them..I love this little one that I made out of a Tiffany & Co. catalogue.
I'm going to have a forest soon!!

Scavenger Hunt Sunday

I'm actually posting my Scavenger Hunt Sunday photos on Sunday. Yay me!!
I haven't been able to participate in a few weeks so I'm happy to be back.
1.Portrait
This wasn't a planned portrait, we were getting our tree at the Christmas tree farm and I saw this old relic right in the parking lot.  I thought it would make a nice backdrop and it did!
Sweet Shot Tuesday
2.Nostalgic
I made these photo ornaments for our families in 2001.  Decorating the tree is always nostalgic for me but especially when I see a photo of the kids from the past.
3.Time
Our Advent calendar. That sure measures time(and how quickly it is flying).  This year I had it filled early so I put this sign on it.  Don't know why it looks like "pee king" rather than "peeking". ha ha!
4.Full of Light
This is another shot from the tree farm.  I noticed how the light was streaming all over the fluffy weeds and how pretty it was.  My kids were really good sports that day and I have the beautiful photos to prove it.(see my header for more)
Favorite Photo-November
5.Motion
This shot is from a few weeks ago (before the hair cut). She had just gotten her new cheer uniform and I wanted to get some photos of her in it.  Girl can jump, right?

Dinner..errr..Kitchen for Four - Hold the Scallops!

We finally got rid of something that has been bothering me since we moved in to this house (about six years ago).   See the arrows above for a HINT!  After updating the kitchen with adding bead board to our island, then doing this little update and painting the kitchen a new color, I finally mentioned to my husband that I'd really like to have that scallop piece removed from above the sink and window area.
To see the kitchen from the very beginning, click here.
I think the scallop piece really dates our kitchen back to the 80's when it was installed.  The only problem was - what if it damaged the existing cabinets and walls when we took it down?
Hubs checked out how it was being held up and saw that there were only a few nails holding it up there inside the cabinets on either side.
It seemed like it would be a fairly easy removal.
{fingers crossed}
He decided to go for it and as I was grabbing the camera, it was coming down!
{Hooray!}
We were left with this little piece of molding which actually didn't look that bad.
We also had these holes to contend with.
Hubs decided he could take down the molding and cut it to finish off the cabinets.  He's getting really good with that circular saw (wait till you see the next project we have planned!).
So after carefully removing the molding, we had a nice strip of unpainted ceiling. Luckily we had leftover paint (Benjamin Moore Puritan Grey).

He touched it up and gave it a quick coat of paint (it was the day or two before Thanksgiving) but he wants to sand it down again and give it one more shot of the paint to make it look totally smooth. He also painted the exposed cabinet ends black to match the bead board (Benjamin Moore Blackberry) and stained the area that had the holes in it.
He mitered the molding on the cabinet tops as if they'd always been that way.
I think he did a fabulous job!!
Even though this was a small change, that probably only we notice, we couldn't be happier with the results. It lets in more light and doesn't feel so dated anymore.  I'm thinking of adding a valance with some punchy grey and yellow fabric but I'm still looking for that.   Here's an idea for that valance that I pinned that I absolutely love.
In the meantime I have it swagged with some greenery for the holidays.
Have you done any minor changes lately? Major ones? Let's hear it!

Thrifting-All White and Shiny

Took a quick trip to Good Will last week and here are my spoils.
I'm officially obsessed with this bowl.  I love the cut work around the base and the fluted shape.
It's from one of my old faves, Bombay.
I was on the lookout for some candlesticks to add to my Thanksgiving table and these simple white ones did the trick.  I think they'll be super versatile.
The bottoms look a little a nasty, eh?
I also found this silver mirrored tray. I have a similar one in gold but I love the silver even more.
I found two other items but they are going in the Advent Calendar for my kids so they are a surprise.
What have you been thrifting lately?
