{Travel} European Vacation - Day 9 London

We wanted to make the most of our short time in London and were up bright and early.  

After a quick breakfast in the hotel we took a cab and asked our driver to stop here....

and to please wait for us while we did...

My two big Beatles fans had their moment on Abbey Road!

 We hopped back into the cab and got out at Buckingham Palace.

We were so lucky that it happened to be the changing of the guards!

 Get ready for lots of photos around the palace and grounds.

 It was such a gorgeous, sunny day!

 

After taking oodles of photos and walking around the Buckingham Palace area we walked over to see Westminster Abbey and Big Ben.

 We crossed Westminster Bridge to look for a place for lunch.

 We ate lunch at Troia, a Mediterranean and Middle Eastern restaurant.  This was our hummus appetizer. yum!

 After lunch we stopped in at Starbucks and added to our mug collection.

We took the tube back to the hotel to rest up and get ready for our evening.

{Travel} European Vacation-Day 8 London

Day 8 of our vacation (actually day 9 of our trip) had us saying a fond farewell to Paris and heading off to London via the Eurostar train.  We were up very early (still dark out) and picked up by the same company we used for transportation from the airport (Victor Cabs).  It was a short drive to Gare du Nord train station but it was nice to have a van and a driver for all of our bags.  Checking in at Gare du Nord for the Eurostar train was relatively easy and we went through Customs in Paris then waited in a lounge until our train arrived.

By the time we were on our way, Mom was ready for a nap. :) The trip is a little over two hours and was smooth sailing (or is it chugging?) all the way to London.  I thought I would be nervous once we went under water in the tunnel but it wasn't bad. You stow your own bags which is nice for departing the train (no baggage claim to wait for).

The train from Paris arrives at St Pancras Station in London.  We were right across the street from Kings Cross Station so we walked over to indulge our inner Harry Potter geeks.  You can see Platform 9 3/4 and even pose for a photo if you like.  Seeing it was enough for us and we were ready to explore London so we hopped in our first London cab  (they are huge!) and went to our hotel.   We stayed at the Marriott Marble Arch.  Our room wasn't ready so we left our bags and headed out on the town.

We grabbed a quick bite at The Grazing Goat pub and then walked over to check out all of the swanky shopping on Oxford Street.

I was so excited to see this sign (do you watch Mr. Selfridge?).

Selfridge's was pretty awesome. You could easily get lost in there.  After a little more window shopping and seeing London's Marble Arch we went back to the hotel to check in and rest up a bit.  We didn't have any evening plans and asked the concierge if we could get any theater tickets (we tried from home but we weren't successful) for that night. He was able to get us tickets to The Commitments musical. Score!

We took a cab to Soho and also checked out the West End and Picadilly Circus too. We had dinner at Negra Bodega (Mexican food!). Cheers!

The Palace Theater was just a few steps from the restaurant.

The show was so good and a lot like the movie (which I love).

The actors were all so talented and did a really long encore with even more songs from the soundtrack.  Everyone was on their feet for the whole thing!  

Fun fact, they sell Haagen Dazs ice cream at intermission (that was new to me) and you have to buy your program(Playbill) at the show.

{Get Thrifty} Thursday 02.05.15

I haven't done a Thrifty Thursday since December and I've missed them. I'm taking a little break from our Paris/London trip posts to share my latest thrifty finds.

For less than $16, I picked up:

1)Grey GAP cardigan

2) Blue and white striped long sweater (3/4 sleeve)

3) Pink and white gingham button down

4) Old Navy pink and white tunic top

5) Pretty white plate (.73c)!

Woo hoo! 

It's fun to be back thrifting.
