{Entertaining} Vintage Key Place Cards

Miss High School's Sweet 16 party was Vintage Glam Halloween-Hollywood Tower Hotel themed and perfect for her October birthday. {See her Repurposed Bird Cage turned card holder here.}  She liked the idea of keys as place cards for her guests.

We ordered the keys on ebay in bulk because of her large guest list. They arrived quite rusty, as in get all of over your nice outfit,rusty.  We wanted to keep the vintage look but not ruin everyone's clothing.

 I sprayed them with a matte acrylic sealer. I gave them a couple of coats and turned them over to coat each side.  That did the trick!

She attached the keys to the gift tags we found at Ikea and added her guests' names in gold Sharpie. As the guests arrived, they found their "room key" and picked where they wanted to sit at the tables. They also got to take them home as a sweet memento from her party.

{Recipe} Aruban Black Bean Soup

We woke up to frost everywhere this morning.  Brrr! This is a soup that would perfect on a day like today, though I eat soup all year round and actually had the inspiration for this soup on a warm day in Aruba.

I couldn't find a recipe for Aruban (or is it Arubian, I've seen it both ways?) Black Bean soup so I fiddled around with a few black bean soup recipes to come up with my own.

Aruban Black Bean Soup
{4 servings}

2 cans of black beans, rinsed and drained

1/2 large red onion, chopped

1-2 yellow peppers, chopped in large chunks

2-3 cups of vegetable broth

cumin, salt, pepper

1-2 cloves garlic, crushed

Saute onion and garlic in Dutch oven (add olive oil or spray if you like). Cook until translucent. Add peppers and saute for a few minutes more.  Add beans, broth and spices to taste. Bring to a boil and reduce heat to simmer.  Carefully remove a cup or two of the soup and puree in a blender (or use an immersion blender).  Return to pot and allow to thicken on low.  I served mine over brown rice.

So simple and satisfying!

{Travel} Last Hurrah of the Summer

Miss High School and I had a fun girls' trip over Labor Day weekend.  It started with a yoga class and then some breakfast at a local bagel shop.

This was a veggie/hummus combo on an everything bagel thin. Yum!

We took off on our adventure, stopping for a selfie at the rest stop.

We were visiting my mom and her beau at his beach house.  We stayed up in the converted attic space which was super cute!

After getting settled in they took us to the beach.

It was kind of misty but you could see Atlantic City in the distance (just barely).

Later, we had happy hour overlooking the beach.  They brought a cooler with snacks and beverages and knew the perfect place to enjoy them.  We went out to dinner and browsed around in all of the cute shops in town.

They took us to a pretty spot to see the sunset and then gave us a tour of the island, ending with ice cream!

We were determined to see a sunrise (on my summer bucket list) so we set the alarm for EARLY.

The two of us got dressed and rushed down to the beach. I thought we might have missed sunrise because it was already fairly light out.

I managed to take a whole slew of photos as we walked along the water.

There it was!

It came up exactly when it said it was going to come up and it was gorgeous!

I'm so glad we caught it before it went behind the clouds.  Have you ever been up to catch a sunrise? I think I'm going to be doing it more often in the future!
