Back To School Mantel

I was ready to take down my summer patriotic and shell decorations from the mantel but not quite ready to pull out the pumpkins so I put together a Back To School themed mantel.
I used things I already had around the house.  The mantel usually sports a collection of cream colored  elements as a neutral backdrop.
I stacked some of my thrifted  Readers Digest  books and placed an apple (real) and a college textbook that was my grandfather's--Plane Trigonometry And Logarithms. Sounds exciting, doesn't it? Inside he wrote his name, address and Harvard 1929. Not too shabby!
The only new thing I purchased was this $2 wooden ruler while I was out school supply shopping with my daughter.  I put one of my globes on the pedestal in the center of the mantel.  I filled the cloches with mini faux pears.
I found one of my old alphabet stacking blocks(also thrifted) that had an inkwell on it for the letter "I" and also used some Scrabble tiles to spell out Back To School.  I popped a little chalkboard in on the end too.
To the side of the stacked books I put my letterpress collection on top of a "C" block, I've been collecting our initials.  The shiny white artichoke is from Target.

On the hearth I added a few seasonal pieces--a pumpkin drawn in pastels by my younger daughter and a basket of dried hydrangeas (with some flameless candles).
It's just enough for me right now until I get ready to take out my fall decorations. It has been feeling a lot like fall lately but today and tomorrow are supposed to be back in the 90's. What?

I think it looks great! Love that old Harvard textbook that was your Dads. Sorry about no apostrophe...the key is typing a French accented e...uggh...windows 8...it has been reconfigured back to an English keyboard 3 times now!

I am quite boring with my mantel. I has silver and ivory candles and ivory seashells most of the time. It is only changed for Xmas, easter and Fall.

The mini pears in the cloche look great too...The overall look of the ivory is wonderful!

You have made the mantle shine with amazing little bits that fit the theme. Love that you have your grandfather's book, that's cool!

What a great idea! I love how you celebrated back to school! The pieces you chose are perfect for the season. I did decorate for fall, but it was 100 degrees yesterday...and some of my window clings fell down. I guess Louisiana isn't ready for fall yet!

The book from your grandfather is so awesome! It'd be so interesting to see how they did all of that math work before there were calculators to use!

I love your mantle with all the clever school pieces! The globe is my favorite and the accessories have a vintage feel. I was a teacher and enjoy this time of year plus you are so creative with this school theme! I have a similar school theme with my tablescape posting this week and hope you will take a peek! Have a good week!
