{Entertaining} Repurposed Birdcage Card Holder

We've got a special birthday coming up. Miss High School's Sweet 16 is fast approaching and her theme this year is "Vintage Glam Halloween~Hollywood Tower Hotel".
That's quite a mouthful isn't it?
We've been pinning ideas like crazy and she pinned this one as an idea for a card holder.
Luckily I already had the perfect birdcage.  I found this one back in 2010 and was debating about painting it back then but never did.
Even after the first coat of spray paint, I knew it was a good decision.
All done!
She added the bow and tag.  The nice thing is that people can just slide the cards through the bars and they'll all be in one place.  Plus it's a fun decoration!
Here's a little sneak peek of some of the other decor.

{The Abode} Teen Room Update

I haven't shared Miss High School's room in awhile.   In fact it's been four years since we did the last makeover.
Back then it was the Tween Room Makeover.  She's a full fledged teen now(almost 16!) and not surprisingly, her tastes have evolved over the years.  We've kept the walls and furniture the same but added some updates.  I snapped a few Iphone photos of her current (not too staged) space.
We picked up the duvet at Ikea recently and her pillow collection has only gotten bigger.  The throw is a super soft and cozy one from Costco.  The curtains and rods have been up for a few years.
She picked out this tapestry and I think it frames her bed nicely.   She's got some string mood lighting that looks pretty at night.  We still have the zebra print behind it and I'm not sure if I'll use it elsewhere, sell or donate it.
I added the paper lantern and glass lantern (with a battery operated tea light) when I changed out the front porch from summer to fall.
I think this room will keep evolving as she gets older.

{Thrifty Thursday} 09.24.15

Thrifting with Miss High School yesterday was very fruitful!  I found this old patchwork quilt ($12) and immediately snapped it up.
I'm trying to be more selective with my thrifting these days (especially since reading this book) but I couldn't pass this beauty up. I've been looking for a quilt for photo shoots and I think this one will do quite nicely. It needs some work but that only adds to the charm.  See you tomorrow for Friday Favorites!

{Recipe} Frozen Dessert Pizza

I made this dreamy, cool dessert for a friend's birthday and ooooh was it good!
It was cool and refreshing on a summer night, but I'd serve it anytime of year. It's another recipe from the amazing Oh She Glows cookbook. I can't praise this book enough, it's never failed me with it's wonderfully perfect vegan treats.
Here's an online version of the recipe
Most of these photos were snapped with my old Iphone so please bear with me.
The crust reminded me of Coco Krispies!  To make the crust, line a pizza pan with parchment paper.  In a large bowl, mix 2 cups of crispy rice cereal (like Rice Krispies), 2 TBS + 1 1/2 tsp of brown rice syrup, 2 TBS of coconut oil, melted and 4 tsp of cocoa powder (I used dark).  Stir until the cereal is coated. Spoon the mixture onto the prepared pan (10 inch) and press down with another sheet of parchment. Freeze for 5-10 minutes until firm.
Mix up a batch of banana soft serve (2 cups of frozen bananas whipped up in a high speed blender or food processor.    You can use any kind of softened ice cream that you like here as well.
Spread the soft serve over the chilled crust. Leaving a little bit of room around the edge. Freeze again for 5-10 minutes.
For the toppings:
Melt 1/3 cup dark chocolate chips and 2 tsp of coconut oil over very low heat.  When it's mostly melted, remove from heat and keep stirring until completely smooth.
In a small bowl mix 1 TBS of roasted almond butter with 1 TBS coconut oil and 1 tsp maple syrup. Transfer mixture to a baggie and snip off the corner to pipe it over the the pizza.
Drizzle 1/3 of melted chocolate over the pizza and pipe 1/3 of the almond butter mixture. Immediately sprinkle with other toppings (coconut, almonds, cacao nibs, chocolate chips). Repeat steps until all the toppings are used up. Return to freezer to firm up (5-10 minutes).
Take out and serve immediately. It softens up very quickly!
*I wrapped mine up after it was refrozen and put it back in the freezer until we were ready to serve it.
Slice up with a pizza cutter and enjoy!
