We've completed the bead board island in the kitchen!
I love it!
It was my number one wish for our dream projects for 2011.
I was inspired by this one.
Here's where we started.
Ugly wood island that looked like plywood.
This is the pine bead board that we used (from Lowes)
There was a lot of measuring and
cutting...
some glueing and
pounding...
and some nailing.
until we had this.
Which was a big improvement already!
Do you agree?
The hubs did the priming and
painting (Benjamin Moore Blackberry in Pearl finish)
We took a much needed break that night.
For the corners we used the original corner covers, just painted black to finish it off.
Hubs also painted the outlet cover to match.
Here she is!
We also added bead board to the cabinet ends and painted them as well.
It adds a rich texture to the kitchen (well, I think it does!)
Side by side before and after.
So what do you think?
The whole kitchen was completed for under $100 which includes boards, paint and supplies.

That looks so much better. Y'all did a great job. Nice having a handy man isn't it. Love your chandelier above it, too.
Hi Heather,
I love how your island came out ~ it's amazing how much you can do with $100! You've inspired me to do the same to my island - it looks very similar to your "before"! Great job, thanks for sharing! ~Marcy
Your island looks really good! Love the new look!
Perfect! It enhances your kitchen's look 100% Good job.
Heather, it looks fabulous. I totally love it. Makes such a huge difference in the look of the whole kitchen. You did a fabulous job. Hugs, Marty
It's perfect, I love it! I have been wanting a black island too and this is the incentive to do it! I love your whole kitchen and that chandy is the icing on the cake!
Fantastic Heather!
The contrast is perfect with all of the wood you have in your kitchen. Great idea to also do the cupboard ends.
This really turned out great. It does take your kitchen to a whole new level. It is really a WOW project.
Great makeover!

That looks totally awesome Heather. I wanted my hubs to do this too, however our island has cabinets on the other side and it would look awkward.
What a great transformation!!! Such a GREAT idea!
O, gosh...it looks fantastic. What a great job ya'll did. Love it.
I have a peninsula that sticks out & and am gonna do this on it!! Thanks for the inspiration!
The island was nice before, but this really transformed it into a focal point. Great job!

What a beautiful kitchen! And I absolutely love the light fixture over the island. Where did you find it?
@Deb I wish I remembered where I got the light fixture. I ordered it on line about 5 years ago....I will see if I can dig up the receipt!
What a huge difference that makes. Such a gorgeous upgrade and for 100 bucks too! What a great idea that was. ~Lili
I love the beadboard, y'all did a great job!

Just happened to come across this and would love to do this to our island! Out of curiosity, were you able to find pine beadboard longer than the height of your island that you could cut down? What I've been able to find is shorter, about 32" long, and my island is 34" tall. This would be my first DIY project. Thanks!
Just saw this and love the idea! I'm a first time DIY-er. Were you able to find pine beadboard that was longer than the height of your island that you could cut down? I've only been able to find 32" long boards in a package, otherwise I've found the 8' ones.
Thanks!
Now, that’s what I call a DIY genius! Between the dark beadboard and the plywood-look, who would not choose the first one? You put a certain character with the beadboard, and you just made it even better by choosing that dark color. It matched the stool well and gives off the perfect mood for a night of chilling with wine and music. =)

Rodney Orton
Thanks for the great idea and step-by-step pictures!
I think, if we tackle this project, we will add the black beadboard to all the cabinet sides (ie over the sink).
Warmly,
M. Rogier
I seldom make comments, but this is an outstanding job and made an impressive upgrade to your kitchen. Well done.
Look very nice til you put the black on don't care for the black. But that's just me
Just saw this oldie but a goodie In my Pinterest feed so I thought I'd tell you I love it!
Heather your island looks great! I am looking to update my kitchen and noticed your granite and backsplash tile. By chance do you remember the names of each? Thanks!
Oh wow, your island looks great Heather. Love the black with the wood :)
Thanks for sharing at Creative Mondays, pinning :)
Great island, Now paint the cabinets a lighter color and wow wow. Brand new kitchen. Look great with granite too.
Looks great! Did you paint the front side of your island? Or just the back and sides and leave the one side the same color as the cabinets.
@Paige. We left the front side unpainted when we did this update. Recently we did paint the cabinets (white) and painted the front of the island to match!
Your kitchen is amazing! You did a phenomenal job!!!

Heather,
Your kitchen looks beautiful with the bead board. We are doing something very similar but using ship lap rather than bead board. It makes a huge difference and gives a coastal feel to the space.
Heather,
Your use of the bead board is a great idea. It gives your kitchen that special touch. We are doing something similar but are adding ship lap to the front and sides of the cabinets. It gives our kitchen a coastal feel that goes with the decor throughout our home. Your kitchen is beautiful and such an inspiration for others.
